Polymer adsorption in a poor solvent

چکیده
We dlscujs polymer adsorption in a poor solvent. For a single chain we find a wetting transition on an attractive wall when the thermal correlation length f is of the order of the adsorption length D If D is larger than f, for weak adsorption, the polymer chain partially wets the solid surface in the same way as a small liquid drop if D is smaller than f, strong adsorption, the chain forms a flat pancake of thickness D The adsorption of a polymer solution in a poor solvent is considered only when the chains wet the surface At very low bulk concentration the adsorbed chains form a two dimensional dilute polymer solution which is either in a poor solvent or in a good solvent depending on the value of the attractive excluded volume. When this two dimensional solution is in a poor solvent it undergoes a first order demlxing transition analogous

Self-consistent field theory for the distal ordering of adsorbed polymer: comparison with the Scheutjens–Fleer model
In a previous article [E.M. Blokhuis, K.I. Skau, and J.B. Avalos, J. Chem. Phys. 119, 3483 (2003)], a self-consistent field formalism was derived for weakly adsorbing polymers, valid for any chain length. It was shown that the presence of a solid wall induces an ordering of the polymers on the scale of the radius of gyration far away from the surface (the distal region). These oscillations in t...
متن کاملSolvent-dependent critical properties of polymer adsorption.
Advanced chain-growth computer simulation methodologies have been employed for a systematic statistical analysis of the critical behavior of a polymer adsorbing at a substrate. We use finite-size scaling techniques to investigate the solvent-quality dependence of critical exponents, critical temperature, and the structure of the phase diagram. Our study covers all solvent effects from the limit...
متن کاملCoordination polymers from a highly flexible alkyldiamine-derived ligand: structure, magnetism and gas adsorption studies.
The synthesis and structural, magnetic and gas adsorption properties of a series of coordination polymer materials prepared from a new, highly flexible and internally functional tetrakis-carboxybenzyl ligand H4L derived from 1,2-diaminoethane have been examined. The compound poly-[Ni3(HL)2(OH2)4]·2DMF·2H2O 1, a two-dimensional coordination polymer, contains aqua- and carboxylato-bridged trinucl...
متن کاملChapter 6: Effect of Temperature on Nonionic Polymer Adsorption on SiO2 in Aqueous Media
6.1. Goal The objective of the work described in this chapter was to determine if the adsorption of a hydrogen-bonding homopolymer on SiO2 could be enhanced by thermal manipulation of solvent quality above or near the cloud point. It was shown in Chapter 2 from the studies of Killman and Malmsten that insolubility alone will not drive polymer adsorption, when the polymer is well solvated. Howev...
متن کاملHomo-polymers with balanced hydrophobicity translocate through lipid bilayers and enhance local solvent permeability
Recent experimental studies indicate that polymeric structures with a well-adjusted balance of amphiphilic parts may translocate through self-assembled phospholipid bilayers and enhance the passive trans-membrane transport of smaller molecules. Using a coarse grained lattice Monte Carlo model with explicit solvent we investigate self-assembled lipid bilayers interacting with a linear polymer ch...
